"Digital skills" is a broad term that enables an individual to perform tasks or activities involving the use of digital technology. And at Bay Valley Tech, we're teaching students how to use digital technology to support a variety of business initiatives.
Digital skills can be broadly categorized into three primary categories:
Technical skills are the ability to use specific tools or software applications to complete a task or achieve a goal. For example, knowing how to use Photoshop to edit images or knowing how to write code in HTML.
While this is slightly different from the skillset learned in our coding bootcamp, it is essential to understanding digital skills.
Interpersonal skills are the ability to communicate and collaborate with others using digital technology. For example, being able to effectively communicate via email or video conferencing or being able to work on a team project using a collaborative online workspace.
This type of digital communication is important to business practices and allows companies to grow and succeed.
Critical Thinking Skills
Critical thinking skills are the ability to analyze information and solve problems using digital technology. For example, being able to research a topic using the internet or being able to locate and evaluate sources of information.
Digital literacy is the ability to use digital technology, communication tools or social media networks to find, evaluate, create and communicate information. It's also about understanding how these technologies work and their impact on society and culture.
Why Are These Digital Skills So Important?
To be able to participate in society: In our increasingly digital world, it's becoming more and more difficult to participate in society without having some level of digital literacy. For example, many government services are now only available online and if you don't have access or the ability to use the internet, you'll be at a disadvantage.
To be able to get a job: In today's job market, having digital skills is essential. Many jobs require the ability to use specific software applications or computers and those who don't have these skills will likely be passed over for the job.
To be able to keep a job: Once you're in a job, it's important to be able to keep up with the ever-changing digital landscape. Technology is constantly evolving and those who don't adapt will likely find themselves unemployed.
Digital skills are important for everyone, not just those in the workforce. They can help you communicate better, stay connected with friends and family, and even entertain yourself. If you don't have any digital skills, now is the time to start learning!
